Back in 1999 I got together with Derek Sherinian and wrote and played the music on his debut solo album. It became the foundation of Planet X.
Thomas and I have started rehearsing for our upcoming tour.
May 27th to June 12th Thomas and Virgil will be visiting Australia, The Philippines, and Japan on this very special double drumming event series. In Virgil's own words:
"Thomas and I have been friends for a long time and it has always been a goal of ours to get out and do something together. I’m excited to finally make this happen"
Details and links to tickets are on my tour dates page!
We went through some of the Masterclass videos that I produced more than 10 years ago. Online video quality has improved much since, but I still think there’s value in some of these old videos and I might dig out a few of them to post occasionally. I shared this first one on my Facebook Page.
Virgil, Marco, Alex and Andrea are busy with IceFish. Here's the first studio teaser:
In other news, Virgil has booked a mini-tour of California with the great Allan Holdsworth. Check out the tour dates pages for dates and venues.
Last year Virgil was visited by filmmaker Clinton Harn for a brief talk about drive, determination and being true to yourself. On top of some very interesting topics, there's also a few awesome clips featuring sounds from the upcoming IceFish album.
Virgil and the band had an amazing run with their recent residency at Bird's Basement. Several sold out shows and with a documentary crew following them all week. Much more on this later, of course.
Virgil recently completed his grand project, The Dawn Of Time - Orchestral Works.
This recording places the drums at the center of a vast, contemporary orchestral production. A combination of amazing musicians and orchestral virtual instruments bring to life this massive musical undertaking. The orchestral instrumentation, textures, timbres, create a soundscape that beautifully enhances the rhythmic explorations of the drums. The bass and drums are the driving force behind this music, with the orchestra arousing emotions, taking the listener on a transcendent journey. The album also features Virgil playing piano on all tracks, including his first solo piano composition, Prelude No.1.
“To me, orchestral music has other layers to it. It’s so emotive… you see images. The greatest music doesn’t just move you with melody and rhythm…it conjures things up…thoughts, feelings, images, experiences memories…these other ways of inhabiting the world.”
The CD version of “The Dawn Of Time” features indexes for movements within the longer tracks, allowing convenient navigation of the album. Therefore the CD totals 14 tracks, but the program is the same as the 5-track digital download.
The CD also includes a color 12 panel poster fold.
